Purdue Aviation Department

The Purdue Aviation department has a large database of student flight data and were hoping Dataception might be able to use PowerBI to create a dashboard that will help students stay on track with their flight courses.

role

Project Lead + President of Dataception

aim

Make a dashboard with Power BI to improve student progress

duration

October 2023 - May 2024

data

We had real-time data on an AWS server given to us by Jonathon Zuckowlski. The most relevant data to us was:

  • Flight schedules

  • Course lesson types

  • Student hours

  • Class progress (for each class)

  • Aircraft listings

  • Instructors

  • Maintenance Intervals

  • Cancellation numbers and reasons

  • Squawk Active

Connecting to the Data

We connected to the AWS server using Power Query, thus giving us access to all the real time data.

Dashboard Components

  • Announcements

  • Class Progress Tracker (for different classes)

  • Weather

  • Aircraft availability

  • Instructor Availability

process

solution

After connecting to the AWS server, we created an outline of the dashboard and collaborated with instructors and faculty to determine improvements:

  • They loved the color scheme and the way we were able to incorporate everything onto the dashboard

  • Aircraft availability was shown for 1 week in our designs but the instructors thought it to be more beneficial if it was for 1 day instead

  • Class progress was a very big part of the dashboard that they loved

  • All API’s used had to be government websites

After weeks of refinements and meetings, we finally pulled the whole dashboard together using PowerBI.
