research overview

Focus: Understanding how different combinations of parenting behaviors (warmth, moderate harshness, and extreme harshness) relate to adolescent outcomes (e.g., depression, anxiety, aggression, and prosocial behavior).

Target Population: Latine adolescents (ages 10-15) in rural and agricultural immigrant families.

Key Research Questions

  • What are the distinct parenting profiles based on warmth and harshness levels?

  • How do demographics (e.g., gender, age, parental marital status) relate to parenting profiles?

  • How do these profiles impact adolescent mental health and behaviors?

Data Collection

  • Two-wave study with adolescent self-reported measures.

  • Sample size: 253 fathers and 289 mothers analyzed.

  • Key demographic variables: Age, gender, household income, parental education, and marital status.

research methodology

Analytical Methods

  • Latent Profile Analysis (LPA): Identifying distinct parenting profiles.

  • Multinomial Logistic Regression: Assessing demographic associations with parenting profiles.

  • MANOVA (Multivariate Analysis of Variance): Examining differences in adolescent outcomes across profiles.

data analysis & findings

  • Adolescents from the Supportive Parenting profile reported lower levels of anxiety, depression, physical aggression, and verbal aggression.

  • Adolescents in the Inconsistent Parenting profile had the highest levels of these negative outcomes.

  • Moderate Parenting also showed moderate levels of depressive and aggressive behaviors compared to Supportive Parenting.
